Arnold Scales is a very obscure fish decoy carver from the New York side of Lake
champlain. He lived from 1865 to 1965 and his decoys are seldom seen. His
claim to fame is that he guided Babe Ruth and other Yankees on hunting and
fishing trips during the depression. This fantastic, folky decoy is carved in the form
of a white whale and measures 6" long. It is the actual decoy pictured in the
obscure reference book LAKE CHAMPLAIN ICE SPEARING DECOYS AND
CARVERS by Bradford White on page 27. Collectors love decoys that are
pictured in books. It really adds a nice element of authenticity and value to the
decoys. This fish is in beautiful, original condition with normal light wear and no
damage. It has a wonderful, warm patina and excellent age.
