This decoy was made by well known, old time, Minnesota carver Ernie Newman.
Ernie Newman decoys are highly collectible and very difficult to find. This is a fairly
early, tough to find example of this carver's work. It takes the form of a Pike and
measures 8 1/2" long. The decoy is painted in a nicely crazed red with gold along
the back. The eyes are glass and the decoy is completely original with normal,
light wear and a few flakes of missing paint here and there. As with all of the early
Newmans, the paint is nicely checkered. The decoy also has the mouth that
was hand cut with a coping saw. This feature is seen on only the earliest
examples of this carver's work and adds an excellent element of collectibility. Ernie
Newman fish decoys are amongst the most difficult to find and collector interest is
extremely high.
